The expansions are not needed at all. I honestly think they are generally detrimental to the game play. The 1st edition kind of needed an expansion due to a dominant strategy for the Sauron player (at high levels of play), but that was remedied in 2nd edition. The first expansion mainly adds 'heroes' or lords, I suppose, as the title suggests.
Ian Madsen. @Arcadious. The 3-4 player game involves team play. Players win as a team, but there are rules for determining an individual winner inside the winning team. The rules for 3-4 players still balances well, but the game does take longer as actions have to be used inefficiently.
